Helping Farmers in South Africa

A portion of the funds from the 2018 Rwanda Ride has helped 100 household farmers build gardens to feed their families while also teaching these farmers how to harvest grey water to lessen the impact on an already drought-stricken region of South Africa. These farmers also received a Qhubeka bicycle to help them transport water and their harvests.

Qhubeka, one of the non-profits our event supports, has now donated over 90,000 bicycles on the African continent. These bikes have gone to school children, health care workers, and farmers all in a targeted effort to ease the effects of poverty and lack of access to school, healthcare, and proper nutrition.

Tsatsi Phaweni, Executive Director, Qhubeka NPC speaks to the importance of the project the 50 Mile Ride funded.  “Qhubeka is proud to support the Impilo Household Vegetable Garden Establishment and Grey Water Harvesting Project of the Western Cape Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Great Commission Networks (GCN) NPC. The project aims to create 100 household food gardens in the Cape Winelands and Cape Metropole districts.  Recipients earn their bicycles off their commitment and participation in the project, which will eventually benefit 100 Cape Winelands vegetable garden project participants. The bicycles will allow participants to plant and water their gardens and make sure they get their produce to market as quickly as possible, using their own transport.”

Another exciting development within the Qhubeka program is the launch of its new bicycle building company, Real Bicycle Company (RBC). “RBC is an end-to-end bicycle design and manufacturing entity that will help us to supply the best commuter bicycles in the world, as well as creating a new revenue stream for Qhubeka Charity.  Plus we’re providing employment and skills development opportunities in the areas in which we work,” explains Tsatsi Phaweni, director at RBC and Qhubeka.

All bicycles produced in the South Africa manufacturing warehouse will have the South Africa Certificate of Origin, enabling passage of goods to many countries within Africa duty-free. With the launch of RBC, quality bicycles are now being built by Africans for Africans, providing jobs and opportunities beyond the Qhubeka program.

On behalf of Ride for Rwanda, thank you for your support of this event.  Your continued participation is supporting so many young African men and women vying to reach their goals – whether through racing or education, changing their family’s lives forever.  Together, we’ve impacted thousands of lives over the past 13 years.

Making the world a better place one bicycle at a time! #teamisteam

Gasore’s Bike

Gasore is one of the Rwanda Cycling Team athletes that our Ride has helped to support over the years.  His compelling story, as shared by Kimberly Coats with Team Africa Rising, follows below.

Team Rwanda Cycling wrote many stories over the past near-decade about the life of Gasore Hategeka with the team. Gasore was an orphan when he accidentally found his way on to Team Rwanda. Accidental, because Gasore and another rider had come to our team house in 2009 to test. We only had one bike, so the bike was going to go the rider who did best on the watts test. Gasore and the other young man never tested that day thanks to a power outage which lasted until Jock had to leave the next day to fly to the US. We came up with another bike, and they both ended up on the team.

Rwanda Ride and the Rotary Club of Coto/RSM team up to bring fresh water to Africa

Last year, the Rotary Club of Coto de Caza/ Rancho Santa Margarita del Sol, Docent Brewing, and Laguna Beach Beer Company brought you a truly epic Beer Garden!

This year they’re back and are stepping up their game.  Rotary is looking to build wells in Rwanda.  Anyone who has been to that area of the world knows that clean water is very important.

Well, we just so happen to know some Rwandan who can help.

All of this years proceeds from the Beer Garden will be donated to Rotary to help with this Well Project!

Here is a message directly from the Rotary Guys and Gals themselves.

$24 is all it takes to provide clean safe water to one person. That is why the Rotary Club of Coto de Caza / Rancho Santa Margarita del Sol supports water projects to provide clean, sustainable water and sanitation to areas in need throughout Africa. We have teamed up with Ride for Rwanda, Laguna Beach Beer Company and Docent Brewing to help bring water to Africa. All proceeds from this Beer garden will be used to build sustainable, safe and clean wells in Africa.

Water Facts:

· 844 million people worldwide don’t have clean water.

· 2.3 billion people don’t have a decent toilet.

· 31% of schools worldwide don’t have clean water.

· Every minute a newborn dies from infection caused by lack of safe water and an unclean environment.

· Diarrhoea caused by dirty water and poor toilets kills a child under 5 every 2 minutes.

· Around the world, up to 443 million school days are lost every year because of water-related illnesses.

· Every $1 invested in water and toilets returns an average of $4 in increased productivity.

· The World Bank says promoting good hygiene is one of the most cost-effective health interventions.

Food Drive for the Ride and SF Solano

Last year our Ride closed down the street that lead to the San Fransisco Solano Food Bank and their food donation traffic was impacted. While this year, we won’t be closing the street again, we want to do something nice for the local community.  So…

We are doing a food drive this year!

When you show up to the ride, we will be collecting any non-perishable food items for SF Solano and donating them!

Feel free to bring the following:

  • Canned food
  • Boxed food
  • General groceries

Here is what the food bank is all about

“The San Francisco Solano Community Food Bank offers assistance to local residents by distributing groceries (parishable and non-parishable) to those who need them. Support of the food bank comes from these donations”

Also, if you want to make a donation directly, you can here:
